YouTube Chapters vs the Transcript
Chapters split a video into labeled sections on the progress bar. The transcript is the caption text, line by line. Chapters help you jump to a topic. The transcript helps you find a sentence.
Direct answer: select a chapter on the progress bar, or a timestamp in the description, to jump to that section. Open Show transcript when you need the words. Chapters can exist without captions. A transcript cannot.
Key facts
- A chapter is a section with a title and a start time, not a full caption line.
- Creator chapters come from timestamps in the description. The first time is 00:00, there are at least three timestamps in order, and each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds.
- YouTube can also add automatic chapters. Not every video gets them.
- YouTube says chapters may appear in the transcript. The line-by-line text still needs a caption track.
- A missing chapter list is not a missing transcript. They fail for different reasons.
- Youtube To Transcript reads available captions. It does not create chapters.
Use the control that matches the job
| What you need | Use this | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| A topic | A chapter or description timestamp | The title can be broad |
| A sentence | A transcript line | Needs a caption track |
| A shareable moment | A timestamp link after you land | Replay before you quote |
| No chapters on the bar | The transcript or the timeline | Automatic chapters are not on every video |
Find a section, then check the words
- Open the watch page and look for chapter segments on the progress bar.
- Expand the description and look for a list of times and titles.
- Select a chapter to jump to that section.
- When the wording matters, open Show transcript and replay the line.
- If there are no chapters, search the transcript or move along the timeline.
- If Show transcript is also missing, the video has no caption track.
The transcript button is covered in how to show the transcript. Sharing the moment is covered in how to link to a timestamp.
Why chapters can be missing
YouTube does not build chapters from a description list that starts after 00:00, has fewer than three timestamps, or includes a chapter shorter than 10 seconds. Automatic chapters are also skipped on some videos. That does not remove captions. Check CC and Show transcript separately.
If the transcript is missing, read what to do when the transcript is not available. Do not paste the video URL into another site to invent caption text.
How Youtube To Transcript fits
Youtube To Transcript keeps the available caption list beside the player on supported Chrome watch pages, with search and timestamps. Use a chapter to reach a section, then use the caption lines to find the sentence inside it.
The extension cannot add chapters, and it cannot load a transcript when YouTube has no caption track. Review the how-to guide and privacy policy before installing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between YouTube chapters and the transcript?
Chapters are labeled sections on the progress bar. The transcript is the caption text with a timestamp on each line. Chapters jump to a topic. The transcript finds a sentence.
Why does this video have no chapters?
The description may not meet YouTube's rules: first timestamp 00:00, at least three timestamps, and each chapter at least 10 seconds. Automatic chapters are not added to every video.
Can a video have chapters but no transcript?
Yes. Chapters come from description timestamps or automatic chapters. The transcript appears only when a caption track exists.
Do chapters show the spoken words?
A chapter title is a label, not the full speech. Open Show transcript when you need the caption lines for that section.
Can an extension add chapters?
No. Youtube To Transcript reads available captions. It does not write chapter timestamps into the description.
