How to Remove Timestamps from a YouTube Transcript

To remove timestamps from a YouTube transcript, copy the available caption text into a document and remove its time labels there. Save an unchanged version first. Keep the video link and a few reference timestamps so you can still check important passages.

What this method changes

This method cleans a reading copy of the transcript. It does not change YouTube’s captions or create text for a video without an accessible caption track. Removing timestamps also does not fix recognition errors or turn a transcript into a summary.

Clean the transcript in five steps

  1. Open the video description and choose Show transcript when it is available. Copy selectable caption text, or use the copy controls in our Chrome extension on supported computer watch pages.
  2. Save the original text with its timestamps. Add the video title, channel, source URL, caption language, and the date you checked it.
  3. Duplicate the text into a separate reading copy. Identify whether the time labels occupy their own lines or appear before each caption.
  4. Delete only those time labels. For a short excerpt, manual editing is often enough. If your editor supports pattern matching, preview a small selection before replacing matches throughout the document.
  5. Join caption fragments into paragraphs and compare the result with the original. Replay any passage where punctuation or a word changes the meaning.

Protect numbers that belong to the sentence

A time label might look like 02:15, but a speaker can also mention a clock time, score, ratio, or duration. Removing every number with a colon can damage the content. Check the position of each match rather than assuming that its shape identifies a timestamp.

For example, imagine a caption at the two-minute mark that says “The meeting starts at 10:30.” Delete the caption’s navigation label, but keep 10:30 inside the sentence. This is an editing example, not a quote from a real video.

Keep a route back to the source

For reading, a clean paragraph may be convenient. For a quote, disputed claim, or technical instruction, retain the original timestamp in a footnote or source note. If you later ask an AI tool to summarize the clean copy, keep the timestamped original for checking the result.

For Arabic or Hebrew text, use an editor with right-to-left paragraph support. Check that deleting time labels has not moved punctuation or changed the order of remaining numbers. Keep accents and original spelling in other languages.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove timestamps without an extension?

Yes. If the transcript text can be selected, paste it into a document and edit the copy there. The extension is an optional way to copy available captions.

Will removing timestamps fix incorrect captions?

No. Time labels and caption accuracy are separate issues. Listen to the original audio before changing an uncertain word.

Should I remove timestamps before quoting a video?

Keep a timestamped original. You can use a clean reading copy, but retain a source reference and the time of any passage you quote.
